special air quality statement in effect Smoke is causing or expected to cause poor air quality and reduced visibility. Where: Mayo What: Wildfire smoke continues to impact air quality in the Mayo region Monitor alerts closely and follow instructions from local authorities Due to smoky conditions from wildfires, individuals may experience symptoms such as increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath. If you are experiencing symptoms, limit outdoor activity and/or strenuous physical activity; if breathing becomes difficult or uncomfortable, stop or reduce the activity. Those who are more at-risk from the impacts of wildfire smoke are: children, pregnant women, elders, those with lung or heart disease and people participating in sports or strenuous work outdoors. Limit outdoor activity and strenuous activities as much as possible. Reduce exposure to smoky air by staying indoors with windows and doors closed and turning on an air cleaner with a HEPA filter, if you have one. Keep indoor air cleaner by avoiding smoking or burning other materials. If heat is also an issue: - Seek out a cooler space. - If your home is not air-conditioned, be sure the house doesn't get too warm when doors and windows are closed to keep out smoke. Exposure to too much heat can also result in illness. - When driving in a vehicle, keep the windows closed and set the ventilation system to recirculate. Vehicles should not be used as a shelter, but as a means to get somewhere or to leave the area. Drive carefully because visibility may be reduced. Keep your headlights on and watch for other vehicles and wildlife. If you have neighbours, friends, or relatives who live alone, check on them to make sure they are okay. For any health concern, contact your health care provider.
